PEACE DAY
60 years since the first atom bomb.
There is a statue in Hiroshima Japan, of a girl named Sadako, holding a golden paper crane. (Great story called Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, about a girl dying of leukemia because of radiation from the bomb. She tries to fold a thousand paper cranes so that she will be healed, but she only gets two thirds of the way there. Her classmates fold the rest for her.) On August 6th each year, people fold thousands of paper cranes and put them on the statue. They also light lanterns and float them on the water to remember those lost when the atom bomb fell. The statue has a short poem on it...

We watched a documentary on CBC on the bombings etc. WOW! It was heart-wrenching and eye-opening to say the least! I didn't realize Jacob was born on the anniversary of the first atom bomb attack.
